Joshua vs Fury - The Fight That Could Save Boxing

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have finally signed a long-awaited deal that aims to not only unify the heavyweight division for the first time in its history but could possibly also save modern boxing.  The two heavyweight champions have been in and out of negotiations for the last few months, but according to promoter Eddie Hearn, the terms of the 2-fight blockbuster deal have finally been reached.  With no date or venue set as of yet, both fighters have got a lengthy amount of time to prepare for what will be the biggest fights of their careers, and therefore should be at their best when a date and venue is finalised. However, this fight of the millennia does come with a lot of risks.  We've all seen super fights go wrong before, as with entire careers on the line, fighters become reluctant to put it all on the line. Mayweather Jr vs Pacquiao was meant to be one of the greatest fights of all time, with both boxers at the top of their game at the time of the bout. Instead...

The Most Dominant Athlete of 21st Century

"Power and influence over others" is how the dictionary defines dominance. In sport, its a little more tricky. After all,  how can someone like me rank Lewis Hamilton's 7 World Titles against Floyd Mayweather's undefeated boxing record? Easy. Objectivity. It's no secret that some of the names on this list have been handed their high pedestal but what no one can question, is the sheer superiority that these athletes have shown over all others.  1. Floyd Mayweather  Floyd Mayweather is a controversial character and is certainly one that I myself have never followed but no one can question his dominance across multiple divisions of world boxing. Throughout his multiple retirements, Mayweather retained a professional record of 50-0, losing his last fight as an amateur in 1996. In his time at the top, he held 5 weight division titles and looked simply untouchable, only being knocked to the canvas briefly in a bout against Carlos Hernandez in 2011. Today, he may been th...

Unisex Sport - Could male and female athletes compete against each other?

Gender equality is something that has been debated over for centuries. In 2021, the situation is still not perfect, but major steps have been taken to make the sporting world a more inclusive place. The Olympics have played a major role in this and was the very first sight of women's participation in sport on a global scale when they were invited to compete in the 1900 Paris Olympics across five events. Since then, women's participation has exploded into almost every sport at both the Olympic games and as professionals. However, watching professional sportsmen compete against professional sportswomen is still something that is rarely observed and can only be found in events such as Tennis (mixed doubles) and Equestrian. So the question is, will we ever see professional unisex sport, and what are the needed steps to get there?   Anatomically, there are a lot of differences between male and female athletes. For example, higher levels of testosterone in males allow for increased m...

2020 - The Year Boxing Died

In late 2020, boxing has become something of a laughing stock. Once what was one of the most prestigious and entertaining sports that promoters had to offer, has now turned into a media circus that is only motivated by paychecks in their pocket. Now with one of the biggest fights of the millennia coming in 2021, where Anthony Joshua will face Tyson Fury to unite the heavyweight division for the first time in history, it is hard to see the death of boxing happening anytime soon. Well, that's at least how most people see it. However, past this bout, the lack of potential contenders for the heavyweight crown quickly reduces itself to zero. Combine this with social media influencers and former sports stars fighting each other with no less skill than kids in a playground, and you can start to see why this once loved pastime is quickly becoming the laughing stock of modern sport.  Boxing's origins can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Greeks when it was introduced into the An...
